"Waiting for us, mirroring us, the dunes slide over the highway, blocking our path. An oasis of violent tenderness smokes the house, warming it through. You don’t like me moving away from the fire; everything becomes unclear. I don’t like getting burned, so I keep my distance. We dye wine together, but it’s hard to get the stains out of our clothes—though removing clothes is easier. It’s important that the light pouring through the window blinds everything else. We must meet there, in that moment. You look at me. I feel self-conscious but still pose for you. You get angry, yet you continue to look at me."
